Our Role in Multilateral Relations 

Operating from Addis Ababa, the diplomatic capital of Africa, the Embassy of Sri Lanka serves a vital dual purpose. Beyond our bilateral mandates, the Mission functions as Sri Lanka’s Permanent Observer Mission to both the African Union (AU) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA).  Through these critical institutional anchors, Sri Lanka actively engages with continental frameworks, shapes South-South cooperation, and contributes to the realization of Africa’s vast socio-economic and developmental potential. 

Our Role in the African Union (AU)

As a Permanent Observer to the African Union, Sri Lanka aligns itself with the grand vision of Agenda 2063, the blueprint for transforming Africa into a global powerhouse of the future. Our engagement focuses on cross-regional solidarity, trade architecture, and sustainable growth.

Leveraging Sri Lanka's globally recognized strengths, the Mission champions cooperation in high-potential sectors including technical and vocational skills transfer, renewable energy deployment, digital transformation, and sustainable agriculture.  

Fostering shared perspectives between South Asia and Africa on multilateral platforms, defending rules-based international orders, and ensuring global systems remain inclusive of developing economies

Our Role in the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA)

Our accreditation as Permanent Observer to UNECA provides a robust framework for intellectual leadership, knowledge-sharing, and collaborative macro-economic development. Sri Lanka and UNECA work side-by-side to address complex, modern global challenges.

A primary pillar of our UNECA partnership centers on sustainable ocean governance and environmental resilience. Sri Lanka leverages its experience including its role within the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) to collaborate with African nations on maritime safety, sustainable fishing, and protecting coastal ecosystems. 

Recognizing that both Sri Lanka and the Horn of Africa face severe vulnerabilities to climate anomalies, the Mission works through UNECA platforms to advocate for global climate financing, disaster risk reduction, and green energy transitions.

Engaging in institutional dialogues focused on post-pandemic economic recovery, fiscal restructuring, and utilizing digital financial technologies to enhance domestic transparency and accountabilities. 

From youth-driven digital innovation to vast renewable energy landscapes, Africa's rapid, dynamic transformation offers a vital blueprint for sustainable growth. Sri Lanka is fully committed to building mutually beneficial, long-term partnerships across the continent
